Indigenous Botanical Dyeing w/ Meztli Projects

On Sep. 28, KSP kicked off our 2024-2025 cohort with an Indigenous botanical dyeing workshop at Harold A. Henry Park. This workshop was led by our amazing friends at Meztli Projects, an Indigenous based arts and culture collaborative. Meztli Projects works to center Indigeneity in the arts to highlight and support Native and Indigenous Artists and systems-impacted youth.

Joel Garcia and MiguelAxel Burrola from Meztli Projects walked us through Indigenous dyeing methods using indigo, acorn, and persimmon. They taught us the process step by step, from preparing the designs for our fabrics, dipping them into the homemade dyes, and hanging them to dry in the sunlight.

With our current KSP cohort focusing on the topic of Traditional Healing Arts, this workshop was an avenue to learn traditional arts practices, create together, and gather the community. Thank you so much to Joel and Miguel for leading our time together!

Our 2024-2025 workshop series on Traditional Healing Arts will continue throughout the semester. Please refer to our events page for upcoming workshops.
