On Thursday the KSP team visited the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures with some of our friends at St. James Manor to watch a screening of Next Sohee, directed by Jung July.

Celebrate a year of intergenerational stories and delicious memories with Koreatown Storytelling Program! KSP's 2022-2023 cohort on the food industry in Koreatown has reached its culmination, and we couldn't be prouder of our participants. To celebrate we gathered at Feng Mao Lamb Kebab on Western for a meal with KSP students, the amazing individuals we interviewed and learned from, as well as our dedicated interns!

In 2022 and in partnership with Korean American Story, Koreatown Storytelling Program interviewed Barbara Uni Lee Potter. Barbara spoke to her experiences of being a Korean American Pioneer, a descendant of the First Wave of Korean immigration, and one of the earliest known Korean American adoptees.

Koreatown Youth and Community Center (KYCC) has been approved for a $30,000 grant award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), for the second time, to support the Koreatown Storytelling Program! Learn more here!

Koreatown Storytelling Program will be learning how to make JAPCHAE from Jenny! Before the big cooking day we went with Jenny and Cathy to get ingredients and supplies. We CANNOT wait to learn (and to eat) Jenny’s delicious japchae and share the recipe with you.

Thank you for joining Koreatown Storytelling Program, @GYOPO.us, San Gabriel Valley PFLAG and the UCLA community @uclagenderstudies at Navel for last weekend’s @Navel.LA screening of the South Korean documentary Coming To You! It was SO special to meet the director, Byun Gyuri @gyuri_byun, the stars of the documentary, Vivian and Nabi, and be in such a warm and welcoming space. After the powerful screening, KSP participant Chloe Kim Manilay shared the stage with the stars and SGV PFLAG activist Sung Tse in a panel discussion of the film and their experiences with some time for a Q&A!

We had an incredible night exploring race and class in Los Angeles with our partners @KAFLA and @KYCCLA, and @CTGLA's performance of monologues from Twilight, a play that continues to be relevant decades after the 1992 LA Civil Unrest and the issues of race and class that surrounded it. Afterward, we had a thought-provoking conversation with Steph Cha, author of YOUR HOUSE WILL PAY, who shared her deep insights into Los Angeles' racial tensions and cultural clashes.

On Saturday, May 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. at NAVEL Koreatown Storytelling Program, in partnership with GYOPO, San Gabriel Valley API PFLAG, and UCLA Department of Gender Studies, invites you to a screening and panel discussion of the groundbreaking documentary film Coming to You.

Recently, Chef Jose Spillari of Paseo Chapin taught Koreatown Storytelling Program & KYCC Bridge Students how to make Guatemalan Chilaquilas. The chilaquilas consisted of chayote and queso fresco fried in an egg batter and topped with a delicious roasted salsa. Jose was a joy to have as a culinary guide and we learned so much from him about how to make food as well as his own food memories and stories.

In honor of Global Intergenerational Week, Koreatown Storytelling Program wants to highlight an interview we conducted with Janet Burt in partnership with Korean American Story. Our KSP participant, Lauren, asked Janet about her experience as a “1.5 generation” Korean American, growing up in Koreatown and her favorite kind of kimchi!

The On Being Project and CoGenerate, created a guide to meaningful cogenerational knowledge sharing through the intimate process of creating and sharing a recipe together. This semester our youth participants have shared this experience with older adults and have learned new recipes, cooking techniques, and about the personal experience and memories of foodmakers!

Last weekend, with Korean American Story, Koreatown Storytelling Program youth participants interviewed four older adults about their life, memories, and experiences. We learned so much about the history of Koreatown and the specific life stories of our narrators, and several youths chose to interview elders who they have known for a long tim

At Koreatown Storytelling Program, we’re proud of the innovative and creative ways in which we bring together older and younger people for mutual, lasting benefits.

Koreatown Storytelling Program is thrilled to be among a select group of creative projects whose work is featured in a new media collection from The On Being Project and CoGenerate and we can’t wait for the kick-off event on March 23 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET.
